News – September 2011

We are now a registered Industrial and Provident Society (IPS). We had been waiting to receive confirmation and a registration number from the FSA (Financial Services Authority), and now it has come through. This means we are be able to go ahead and sell shares to achieve our aims of co-ownership of the centre.

Our next job is to prepare a Prospectus with proposals, plans, figures etc. giving all the information one needs to make a decision to buy shares. As a preview, shares will start at £100 (well that’s £1 each share but you must buy 100 or more). The Prospectus will be ready in about a month, and the share launch date will be announced soon. We are hopeful that the necessary amount can be raised and Hurrah, a big celebration will be on the cards.

Big Mind
On Saturday 17th September a small group of people who came to Fellside were skilfully led into a personal exploration of “Who Am I?” from a Zen Buddhist perspective – an interesting and enlightening day. Big thanks for Dave Scott for giving his time in leading the group and to all those who came and supported FOFC. Read more on our events page

The next event when you can support us is a Ceilidh with The Macaroon Ceilidh Band and guests on Friday 14th October. Please pass on the information to anyone who you think might like to come, and please come yourself. It promises to be a warm and energetic evening, so a good way to bring roses to the cheeks and prepare for the colder weather. Read more on our events page

Also to come on 3rd December is an exhibition of the work of Josephina de Vasconellos, a sculptor who lived and worked in Cumbria. You can google her and see her sculptures and where they are sited.

We are also planning a Percussion Day in the new year.

We have been accepted by the The Co-operative Hub, a government and Co-op funded organisation to help set up other co-ops. They provide four free days of help.

A company called CMS (Co-operative and Mutual Solutions) is providing specialist consultancy support for our social enterprise. In our case we need legal and organisational support. This would help us put together a prospectus which would cover all the particular details of a situation like ours, so that we can then SELL SHARES IN THE FELLSIDE CENTRE, ENABLING IT TO BE OWNED BY AND FOR THE COMMUNITY.

We envisage shareholders in Australia, America, Hong Kong, Europe, all over the UK and in particular in Cumbria. In fact far and wide. Just imagine individuals and groups from far afield knowing they have a share in the Centre, giving them a voice in what goes on; co-operative values are such that no matter how many shares you have you still have one vote. The Centre will then be safe and secure to go into the future with this type of joint ownership.

Tell us what you think – take part in our survey

A small charity has now been set up whose aim is ‘To Enable the Continuation and Future Development of the Fellside Centre in Kendal as a Facility to Promote the Health, Well-being and Artistic Development of the People of South Lakeland’.

Friends of Fellside Centre members are exerting all their efforts now to secure Social Enterprise support to become a Community Co-op.

We would like to know what you think about the Fellside centre and what activities you would like to see there, so if you could take a moment to complete our short survey, we’d be very grateful.

Please get in touch to offer any kind of support.

You can drop into the Fellside Centre and pick up a form, join ‘Friends of Fellside’ and to donate £10 (or whatever you can afford) towards the current setting up costs.

We are also approaching charities for grants.

Feb 2011

The centre is under threat of closure and we are appealing for your support.

February 2011:
The ownership of the Fellside Centre presently resides with two main shareholders. One of the shareholders intends to release their share. The other share holder, who is the on-site manager, wishes to continue to run the Fellside Centre as the much loved local resource that it has become.
What We Are Doing Now:
We are currently looking into  setting up The Fellside Trust with the Charities Commission. This Trust will own and administer the Fellside Centre under the direction of a board of trustees, thus securing the future of the Center for the people of Kendal.

We need your ideas, support, donations and sponsorship to build our future.

How You Can Get Involved:

  • You can join the Supporters of Fellside Community Group and get actively involved.
  • Donate money or offer sponsorship to purchase the building.
  • Join us in organizing an Awareness Raising Day to solicit the support for the continuation of the Centre.
  • Offer your knowledge and skills on the Board of Trustees.
